When I Stop Need It, It Starts Working
“When I Stop Needing It, It Starts Working” is a solo bass/solo dance improv performance. Frankie Freeman is an amazing dancer and really cool person that I met in a yoga class (note to self: yoga classes are always great). I’ve lately been really fascinated with the idea of movement so this was a really fun expression of that for me and my bass. The video was shot by the very talented Angélica Pérez-Castro
“When I Stop Needing It, It Starts Working” is about treating your body the way you would treat a friend. Everywhere I look, I see people treating their bodies like a project or a busted down car. “I need to work on this.” “I need to optimize this.” And I get it because I have been there myself. Having a “career ending” brain injury has really set me down a path that I’m very grateful to walk side by side with my body. I am so grateful for it and the millions of little things it is always doing for me. Like seriously, “I” don’t know how to digest food, replicate cells, beat my heart etc. But my body does.
I feel as if I am two people, my mind and my body. One is made of questions and one is made of answers. When I stop “needing” to answer these questions, they start appearing all over the place.
I hope you and your body check this performance out. I know you both will enjoy it.
